Website design rates: start at minimums of $100 for sites for an individual and $400 for sites about companies. Rates will vary according to complication of required work. So use this only as a starting point. This is a one-time fee.

Maintaining & Edits: Prices will vary according to changes, but no where near design fees. This could be set up as a monthly rate or as it occurs. If you want to maintain your own site you can, but I have noticed problems with sites maintained this way in the past. Minimum Fees begin at $20.

domain names:

ibm.com | Amazon.com | PlazaDesktopPublishing.com - these are domain names.

Most of your ISP's (Internet Service Providers), like my service RCN or AOL, or Earthlink, etc., supply space for webpages. But the bugaboo is that you can't have a domain name, thus you wind up with an address like: "http://users.rcn.com/dsbarron/plazadesktoppublishing/index.htm" . Not too easy to say. Trying saying that to someone on the phone, on the street without a pen and paper. So if you want to have yourname.com or yourcompany.com, i.e. www.plazadesktoppublishing.com or www.doug-barron.com you have to have a domain name.

So think up a couple of names, (no spaces or &, or other symbols allowed, you can use _ and - and numerals though). I also suggest try saying it to some friends on the phone and have them spell it back to you. You might be surprised. For instance, how do you or they spell the building where plays are performed: theatre or theater? As many names are already taken, I suggest you think up several possibilities.

So you've got a name. Now what? Well it must be registered on the internet. Then the internet must know where that name is. Think of it like dialing your phone and it rings somewhere, that is where your site will be hosted.  (see hosting).

Domain names are registered for a fee paid either yearly or in multiple years. Rates vary tremendous. If you supply the domain name and register it, and set it up, there is no fee.

If you want I can register your domain name for you, and discuss with you the various options out there. I charge a one-time or yearly fee of $25, which includes the first year of registration. If you choose to register for multiple years that cost (at no profit to me) will be added.

hosting:

You've got a domain name, now where is it? Websites must physically exist somewhere. This could be your computer, but more than likely not practical. Also most of your ISP's (Internet Service Providers), supply space for a website/webpage. But the caveat is that you can't have a domain name (see domain names above), you wind up with and address like "http://users.rcn.com/dsbarron/plazadesktoppublishing/index.htm"

There are free hosting sites, if you are willing to deal with ads (and not of your choosing) appearing on your page. Most people don't want this, therefore you need something more. Or possibly you can forward it. (see forwarding below)

This requires you get a host for a fee. These fees vary a lot. Is your site for a person, are you a business planning to do e-commerce, take credit cards, provide music, movies? How many e-mail addresses, any e-mail addresses? Are the servers down more than up? These all have different requirements. These sites all require a monthly fee.

If you select and setup the hosting site and supply the technical info I will upload to your hosting site for no additional fee.

If you want I can select and setup the hosting site for a monthly fee to be paid in increments of 3, 4, 6, 12 months at a time - in advance. The reason for this is the hosting sites bill me monthly, automatically - in advance. Hosting fees begin at $15 per month.

forwarding:

There is another option to hosting, sort of a cheat really. But one I use for myself. And it works just fine. This option does not work for everyone. If you are like me you have an ISP that provides you with plenty of space for a website, but you still want a domain name. Well, I use web forwarding. In short some one types in: www.plazadesktoppublishing.com and goes to: http://users.rcn.com/dsbarron/plazadesktoppublishing/index.htm or types in their browser www.doug-barron.com and goes to: http://users.rcn.com/dsbarron. I purchased a domain name, but host my site at RCN, and people get to my site. If this option is available to you then - why not? I have yet to get this to work for AOL, and I need some very technical information, that most ISP's do not want to supply as they want that extra money for hosting your site, but if you can get the info, it can save you the monthly fees. If you want me to set this up for you, I can do this for a yearly fee of $10.

Rates may vary and change without notice as charges to Plaza change.
